Our house, is a very very very fine house…

I spent Wednesday afternoon singing CSNY’s “Our House” with my pal Janine, along with many random other songs, but the tune bests suits this blog’s title.

The Envoy office is my home, even though the couches are dirty and there was a dead rat in it a few months ago. Its the staff’s Central Perk or Monk’s. At any point you can head into 211 Thomas Hunter and someone from the staff will be there, studying, checking their email, taking a nap or already in there with another staff member eating lunch.

I sat in the computer room of the office, on our brand new Macs, responding to an email from one of the recruiters I met at last weekend’s Public Relations forum and I started singing out of nowhere, very gently…”Our house,” and Janine looked up and responded just as softly, “is a very very very fine house. With two cats in the yard,” and in a Broadway show or musical fashion, we broke into song. Our pal from the Media Board next door came in during our sing-a-long performance to the youtube video above and instead of telling us to lower it he said, “Oh man I love this song! Make it louder!” and started singing with us. Especially for a commuter school, this is such a beautiful thing. Spending “out of school” time with your friends, being silly and enjoying college. When I tell people how being a part of a student newspaper is great, this is what I try to drive home.

If you noticed I said I was responding to an email from a recruiter from the forum last week.

This week was a great week for me, career-ly speaking. I applied for my first job! ( applause) It was the first time I got to write, “As per your salary request..” in a cover letter! Even though the salary requests are in the $30grand range it still sounds like monopoly money to me. In any event, I also applied through a contact I made very recently so I’ll keep you posted if I hear anything.

Today I applied for my second job! (applause!) I’m in job search mode. It is an Editorial Assistant position at a division of my dream place, Random House. Will definitely keep you posted. I don’t want to get too excited and get my hopes up but I can’t help it! Hopefully I will get an interview.

In other news, The Envoys website got 580 views on our new issue! I am adding a blogging feature so students can link their blogs on our site and comment on each others opinions, blogs, etc. All part of the community effort I have been working for at the paper. So far just me and one of Media Department’s publications..we’ll see…

We picked the new editors for next year and it sounds like everything is going to be great. We are revamping the Features and Arts section to Entertainment & Leisure. With two editors!

I have also been getting a lot more requests for the paper to head over to shows, whether less mainstream concerts or Broadway shows, for a review. So things are really coming together…of course, just in time for me to leave.

Tomorrow is the Undergraduate Journalism Workshop at the CUNY J-School. Will report on what went on.

Oh! Joe, the Editor in Chief at The Envoy and myself won the James Aronson Undergraduate Journalism Award! We will be attending the ceremony on Monday and I will write about all the people and news outlets that are there and how it goes!
